ADEX first four months of 2021, jewelry and goldsmith exports recovered by 290.6%
.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe The export of Peruvian jewelery and goldsmiths exceeded US $ 30 million 304 thousand in the first four months of the year, registering an important growth of 290.6% with respect to to the same period of 2020 (US $ 7 million 757 thousand), thus directing its recovery process, reported the Association of Exporters (ADEX); In 2020, Peruvian jewelry and goldsmith exports totaled US $ 71 million 300 thousand, highlighting gold jewelry with 84.8% of the total.

Jewelery shipments abroad in April reached 30 markets. The US was the main one, adding US $ 25 million 251 thousand and increasing its demand by 418.1%. In second place was Chile (US $ 2,811,000), which also closed with a significant increase of 456.7%. The top five were completed by Canada, Colombia and Ecuador.

According to a report by the CIEN-ADEX Global Business and Economy Research Center, China was the main supplier of the jewelry sector in 2020 with a 12.8% share, equivalent to US $ 9,890 million. Peru ranked 42nd in the ranking of world exporting countries.

Although the increase is quite significant, the president of the Guild’s Jewelery and Goldsmith’s Committee, Rocío Mantilla, clarified that it is mainly due to the low comparison base of the first months of 2020 when the health crisis began and strongly hit this item , especially due to their low demand as they are sumptuous products.

“It should be noted that these shipments have not yet reached the levels prior to the pandemic, since between January and April 2019 they amounted to more than US $ 54 million 800 thousand, that is, only a little more than half of that value was recovered. Along these lines, we are confident that by 2022 jewelery and goldsmith shipments will once again achieve previous figures ”, he explained.

The positive figures for 2021 – he added – go hand in hand with the higher demand in the US thanks to the little depreciation of gold at this juncture, as consumers see jewelry as a safe haven value (savings and protection measure) .

The North American giant has always been the best destination. In the analyzed period, it concentrated 83.3% of these exports, followed by Chile with 9.3%. Behind are Canada (1.6%), Colombia (1.4%) and Ecuador (1%), among others, with minimal stakes.

“Although these markets are still small, they represent a great opportunity for the sector, especially MSMEs, since as a result of the pandemic a greater rapprochement with the countries of the region was fostered thanks to virtual meetings and fairs,” he explained .

Last year exports were in charge of 223 companies that directed their products to 53 markets. It should be noted that some export more than one product (gold and silver jewelery, costume jewelery and goldsmiths).

In that sense, he highlighted the work of ADEX and PromPerú helping small and medium entrepreneurs in the digitization process, so that in the coming months they can participate in Peru Moda and other activities developed in virtual platforms, contacting buyers with manufacturers. “Our union trained representatives of the OCEX on the reality of our field,” he said.
