El tendón de Aquiles que mide unos diez centímetros de largo tiene como función principal la flexión plantar, impulsándonos en la marcha al caminar, correr o saltar. Durante estas actividades soporta fuerzas de hasta 10 veces el peso corporal.

Posee fibras de contracción rápida que empujan el cuerpo hacia delante y aunque es el tendón más grueso y potente del cuerpo humano también se rompe.

Cuando esto ocurre, la técnica habitual de cirugía reparativa implica 6 meses de recuperación pero si en este proceso, debido a que no se guardó el reposo absoluto requerido y se regresa a las actividades antes de tiempo, se vuelve a romper y ya deja de funcionar.

La segunda cirugía para solucionar la reruptura reconstruyendo el tendón de Aquiles, podría ser más larga y cruenta, con un corte de mayor tamaño, se pierde mucha sangre, más riesgo, más tiempo de descanso físico pues la reparación propia del tendón demora 1 año.

Es entonces que los especialistas del Hospital Luis Negreiros de EsSalud practican un autoimplante de tendón en el paciente.

El Dr. Víctor Bolívar Mendoza, jefe del Servicio de Traumatología explica que la transferencia tendinosa es una técnica que consiste en reemplazar el tendón de Aquiles por otro tendón de la pierna del mismo paciente, que se llama tendón flexor del Hallux y se extiende desde el dedo gordo del pie.

EsSalud compra un sistema de arpones de procedencia americana, para hueso que se emplea en medicina deportiva de la marca Smith and nepweth, una de las marcas más empleadas en tratamientos de lesiones deportivas en atletas.
