In La Libertad EsSalud removes a huge uterine tumor weighing 15 kilos from a 50-year-old woman.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe A giant tumor lodged in the uterus of a 50-year-old woman, weighing approximately 15 kilos and measuring 50 centimeters in height. long by 40 wide, it was extracted in a successful surgery performed at the High Complexity Hospital ¨Virgen de la Puerta¨ of the Social Security, located in the department of La Libertad.

The expertise of EsSalud surgeons made it possible for the tumor to be detached without injuring the rectum such as the ureters where the enormous mass was attached, wreaking havoc on the patient’s health, such as vaginal bleeding, swelling or abdominal distention. Difficulty walking, eating, among other health problems, which were presenting progressively.

Scientifically it is a giant uterine leiomyoma or giant, multiovulated abdominal pelvic tumor, a benign condition of very low incidence. Its resolution represents a challenge for the surgical team due to the large volume of the tumor and the variations in the distribution of the intra-abdominal organs, caused by uterine growth.

The manager of the La Libertad Assistance Network, Dr. José Luis Carranza Castillo, congratulated the Multidisciplinary Team of the Oncological Gynecology Service of the aforementioned Hospital, made up of surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses, medical technologists for the results obtained after the operation. He highlighted that 3 days after the surgical intervention the patient returned home and is recovering favorably.

This emblematic hospital has been gradually resuming the development of complex surgical interventions like this one, in order to extract tumors lodged in the breasts, cervix, ovaries, etc. “This type of operations cannot wait, we are reintegrating ourselves into this work, there is a waiting list that we have to reduce,” said the official.

For his part, the head of the Oncological Gynecology Department, Dr. Folker Agreda Castro, said that, for 5 years, this benign tumor had been compressing adjacent structures, such as the stomach and retroperitoneal structures, such as the rectal ampulla, which temporarily stores the stool, the colon and the ureters which are tubes made of smooth muscle that push urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

These discomforts made the patient seek professional help and go to the EsSalud hospital, where tomography and magnetic resonance studies were carried out, to then schedule exploratory laparotomy surgery plus tumor resection.
