English translation
Coffee exports will grow for the second consecutive year, only last year US $ 1,593 million was exported.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe The president of the Coffee and Cocoa Committee of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), José Antonio Mejía, stated that, if the prices of the coffee, this 2021 would be the second consecutive year in which the export would close with a growth of up to two digits.

Since 2011, when the record in shipments was registered (about US $ 1,593 million), its evolution was compromised by the appearance of rust in 2013. That year it fell -32%, then grew 7% in 2014 , contracted -19% in 2015, increased 25% in 2016 and decreased -7% in 2017, -4% in 2018 and -5% in 2019.

“2020 (US $ 638 million 581 thousand) closed with an increase of 1% and this year, if good prices are maintained, we could close with a rise, with the consequent impact on its entire chain that includes several inland regions of the country ”, he estimated.

In 2020, he continued, Peru was the ninth largest coffee producer in the world, surpassed only by Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Uganda and Mexico, representing 2% of the total.

“The impact of rust is minimizing little by little. In this sense, the work of the workers in the field is very important, pruning and fertilizing the coffee plantation to achieve good quality of the grain – Arabica variety – which is characterized by its great flavor and mild aroma, highly demanded abroad ”, said.

Mejía recalled that five years ago the price per quintal was US $ 80 or US $ 90, but this 2021 it had a good price, approaching US $ 200 per quintal, which had a positive impact on small producers who were paid up to S / 700 per quintal.

GREATER CONSUMPTION
In Peru, per capita consumption is only 650 grams, which is why public-private work must be reinforced in order to improve this volume. “The establishment of the Peruvian Coffee Day and the work of other institutions to promote it are good initiatives,” he added.

We must demolish the myths around this product – he asserted – contrary to popular belief, it is healthy, encourages digestion and favors concentration. It would also help the government to include coffee and cocoa in feeding programs for young school children. In this way, the commercialization will be increased and the situation of the producers will be improved.

“In other countries such as Brazil and Colombia (consumption of 6 and 2.5 kilos per capita, respectively), coffee was included as part of their government programs with the purpose of promoting domestic consumption. It could be implemented in our country in healthy breakfasts in secondary school students ”, he pointed out.

FIRST SEMESTER
Due to better prices, coffee exports in the first semester (US $ 130 million 082 thousand), closed with an increase of 9.8%. Its main markets were the US, Colombia, Germany, Canada, Belgium and South Korea.

Although the US is the main buyer –concentrated 20.4% of the total– other countries registered good growth rates such as Canada with 127.8% (4th place in the ranking), South Korea with 107.7% (6th place) , France with 141.3% (7th place) and China with 211% (11th place).
