Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe Edgar Vásquez Vela, the director of the Global Business and Economy Research Center of the CIEN-ADEX Exporters Association, summoned the Costa Rican businessmen Rica to integrate more with Peru, identify commercial opportunities and build regional value chains in order to generate more possibilities for the population (more employment and less poverty) and reduce dependence on inputs from Asia, avoiding situations such as that of 2020 when supplies were cut. supplies.

During his presentation at the ‘Peru, an Opportunity’ contest, organized by the Embassy of Peru in Costa Rica, he commented that our country has many strengths, one of them is its high integration with the world –commercial agreements with the main economies–, in addition to going through an economic recovery in 2021 after a deep crisis caused by Covid-19 the previous year.

“Although we have made progress in bilateral trade, we still do not look at each other much and part of the interest of this event is to look at each other more; see the opportunities not only with the US, Europe and China, but with Latin America, especially thinking about small and medium-sized companies, which have the opportunity to start in global trade in the region, “he said.

Vásquez also highlighted the importance of the Trans-Pacific Agreement (CPTPP) –Peru integrates it– and said that it is one of the two most important mega-blocks that are being built, together with the RCEP (made up of the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and 5 partners from Asia and Oceania), which will allow us to insert ourselves into global value chains. He added the possibility that it is the largest since the United Kingdom’s entry is being negotiated and China and Taiwan have just asked for its accession.

OPPORTUNITIES
At the event, the director of CIEN-ADEX indicated that, thanks to the agreement in force since 2013 between Peru and Costa Rica, currently 81% of all Peruvian products can enter that country free of tariffs, and in counterpart, 88% of Costa Rican products to Peru in the same way, for which 100% is expected by 2028.

“Bilateral trade between the two nations still does not gain much relevance, hence the need for us to see ourselves from a broader perspective. Peru already has well-positioned products such as fresh grapes or hygiene products, however, there are others whose amounts are still low, but they represent a great opportunity to be better used. It is time to ensure that we are new suppliers ”, he said.

Trade between Peru and Costa Rica – he continued – has remained relatively stable, reaching US $ 55 million a year, on average. In 2020, Peruvian exports to the Central American market totaled US $ 59 million and Costa Rica’s exports to Peru US $ 53 million.

He reported that the main sectors of our country to the Central American nation are the chemical and agricultural-agro-industrial sectors, in addition to being the most dynamic. However, there is great potential to add to other items such as clothing and metalworking.

“We have identified opportunities that would allow us to take advantage of trade liberalization. For example, of the total imports of Costa Rica in products exported by Peru, our country only concentrates 1.4%. In addition, there is a niche of products that the Central American market imports and Peru exports to the world, but not to them, the amount of which would amount to US $ 3.3 billion ”, he stressed.

Finally, he highlighted the export potential of Peruvian products according to Export Potential Map, such as canned tuna, preparations for animal feed, corrugated papers, fish meal, flat forms of polymers, oilseeds, preparations for sauces, capsicum, liners of knitwear, alpaca fiber garments, machinery for the food industry among others.
