Me siento contenta y mucho mejor”, expresó.

EsSalud doctors using endoscopic thyroid surgery using the TOETVA vestibular approach remove a tumor from a female patient in Sabogal.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe Unprecedented. With great success, the doctors of the Head, Neck and Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Alberto Sabogal Sologuren National Hospital of EsSalud performed endoscopic thyroid surgery using the TOETVA vestibular approach for the first time in Social Security on a 46-year-old woman.

The new technique used -TOETVA transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy by vestibular approach- consists of removing the thyroid tumor, leaving it free of scars, offering safety and results comparable to other techniques. However, the only limitation is that only tumors no larger than four centimeters can be removed.

Dr. Miguel Martínez Bastiand, surgeon of the Head, Neck and Maxillofacial service and in charge of the surgical intervention, commented that it is an unprecedented surgery. “This is the first thyroid surgery performed at Hospital Sabogal and it is also the first at Social Security. We have previously performed three transoral endoscopic parathyroid surgeries and all were successful.”

The surgeon explained that the patient had a two centimeter nodule in the left thyroid globule, which required surgery. In the case of not being performed, the tumor would have continued to grow and ran the risk of becoming malignant.

“Conventionally, this surgery is performed through an incision, that is, a cut in the neck of 8 to 10 centimeters, but with this new technique, the tumor is removed by a camera and tweezers behind the lip,” he said.

The main benefit of this technique is to avoid cervical scarring and reduce recovery time. “The patient’s recovery is with less pain and discomfort. The discharge indication is the next day and after a week the stitches are removed”, commented the doctor.

Patient Betty Milagros Ameri Molina thanked the doctors at EsSalud Sabogal Hospital for their great work. “I am very grateful for the care they have put into my case, especially to the doctors of the Head, Neck and Maxillofacial service who have been attentive at all times. I feel happy and much better,” he said.

The surgery was carried out by a team of highly trained doctors such as Miguel Martínez, Lucienne Madueño, Boris Villavicencio and Raúl Maúrtua, who, together with other doctors and nurses, made the operation a success.

As of January 2022, the Head, Neck and Maxillofacial Surgery service of the Alberto Sabogal National Hospital will schedule these surgeries as part of the service offer.
