GABRIEL BORIC FONT

GABRIEL BORIC FONT
Gabriel Boric Font was born in Punta Arenas on February 11, 1986, being the first child of the marriage between María Soledad Font Aguilera and Luis Javier Boric Scarpa, a family with Croatian ancestry on the father’s side and Catalan on the mother’s side, still having residence in Magallanes with the house pet: Brownie.

His basic and secondary studies were carried out at The British School in Punta Arenas, where at some point in his childhood he was the president of his class. During this school period he did an exchange in France, being hosted by Josette Hocquard and Norbert Steimetz in the city of Toul, when he was 15 years old.

Leaving school, in 2004 he entered the Law School of the University of Chile, where his academic level led him to be an assistant in various chairs such as International Law of Human Rights, Institutional History of Chile and Theory of Justice.

He graduated from the race in 2009, but it is not law that fills him, but political life, which has been calling him for years.

As a schoolboy, he led to the refounding of the Federation of Secondary Students of Punta Arenas, in 1999 and 2000.

In 2008 he was elected Counselor of the Student Federation of the University of Chile (FECh), representing the Faculty of Law, while the following year he managed to preside over the Center for Law Students (CED).

He was a University Senator during the years 2010 and 2011, where he began to forge ties with who today is one of the women of the Government Team: Izkia Siches.

At the end of 2011, after one of the largest years of student mobilization since the return to democracy, he won the election to lead the Federation of Students of the University of Chile, competing with who to this day remains his route companion: Camila Vallejo. Since it also allows him to deepen ties with his friend and partner: Giorgio Jackson.

In 2013, he decides to take up the post to start his career as a deputy, launching his candidacy for district 28 (Antartica, Cabo de Hornos, Laguna Blanca, Natales, Porvenir, Primavera, Punta Arenas, Río Verde, San Gregorio, Timaukel and Torres del Paine), being elected with the first majority of the district, without having had a traditional political coalition that supported him.

During the first month of his first term (2014 and 2018), together with Giorgio Jackson, he presented the bill to reduce the parliamentary diet. He was also a member of the Permanent Commissions on Human Rights and Original Peoples; Extreme Zones and Chilean Antarctica; and Labor and Social Security.

In 2016, together with his partner Jackson, they promoted the creation of the Broad Front, launching the presidential candidacy of the now conventional constituent, Beatriz Sánchez. In this election they managed to consolidate themselves as the third political force in the country, with just a few months of training, in addition to obtaining their own re-election as deputy, obtaining the second majority at the national level.

In this second period he belonged to the Constitution, Legislation, Justice and Regulation commissions; and Extreme Zones and Chilean Antarctica.

Within his last years as a deputy, Chile is experiencing a great socio-political crisis, exploding on October 18, 2019. After weeks of widespread displays of social discontent due to a host of actions and disaffection by politicians and businessmen, Gabriel Boric decides to sign the “Agreement for Social Peace and a New Constitution”, which led to the constituent process that Chile is undergoing and which will allow for the first time in history to have a democratic and parity Magna Carta.

Since that year, he has also been in a relationship with Irina Karamanos, a political scientist, anthropologist and sociologist, who proposed to reformulate the position of first lady.

On March 17, 2021, he was proclaimed presidential candidate by his political party, Social Convergence, also being supported by the Democratic Revolution, thus initiating the collection of signatures that would end on May 17, officially registering the race to La Moneda and calling for broad primaries of all the opposition.

These primaries took place only with the coalition itself, Approve Dignity, on July 18, 2021, achieving victory with 60% of the total votes, against his competition: Daniel Jadue.

In the first round of the presidential elections, dated November 21, he obtained 25.83% of the votes, finishing second. With this, the citizenry was activated, reactivating the campaign for the second round with even more force, understanding that what was at stake was greater than the presidential position. In this way, on November 19, he managed to win through the polls in the second round, with a wide advantage over his opponent, achieving 55.8% of the total number of votes and thus becoming the President with the most votes, then of the largest participation and the youngest in the entire history of the Republic of Chile.
