“Hoy enfrentamos desafíos surgidos de la situación inédita provocada por la Covid-19 y la coyuntura internacional, por lo que saludó que muchas de estas preocupaciones se hayan incorporado en los temas propuestos para la cumbre por los Estados Unidos, en su calidad de país anfitrión”, remarcó.

Resaltó la importancia de continuar con la implementación del Compromiso de Lima, y a seguir fortaleciendo el multilateralismo, a fin de alcanzar entendimientos e instrumentos colectivos, para hacer frente a los múltiples desafíos que la actual coyuntura plantea.

El mandatario intervino en la inauguración de la IX Cumbre de la Américas en su condición de jefe de Estado del país que albergó la VIII Cumbre de las Américas, el 2018, la última que se realizó antes de la pandemia. Precedió al dignatario de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, quien tuvo a su cargo el discurso inaugural.

“Que el éxito de la IX Cumbre de las Américas sea un logro significativo de nuestro continente y el Perú contribuirá decididamente a alcanzar este objetivo. ¡América para los americanos!”, expresó con emoción el mandatario Castillo durante la sesión inaugural.

En ese contexto, sostuvo que el Perú aceptó ser país anfitrión el 2018 porque la cumbre es una plataforma valiosa de acción conjunta que debe ser permanentemente fortalecida.

“Desde la primera cumbre, celebrada en Estados Unidos en 1994, nos invita a dialogar sobre preocupaciones comunes y desarrollar una visión compartida para el desarrollo futuro de la región”, indicó.

El jefe de Estado, refirió que se han alcanzado importantes logros como la constitución del diálogo empresarial de las Américas, la adopción de la Carta Democrática Interamericana, así como los impulsos para concretar la Convención Interamericana contra la Corrupción y la Convención Interamericana contra el Terrorismo, entre otros.

Destacó las 57 acciones contra la corrupción adoptadas en la VIII Cumbre de las Américas, realizada en Lima, que orientan las acciones de los países miembros de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) para combatir y erradicar este flagelo, fortalecer la gobernabilidad democrática y la protección de los derechos humanos.

El presidente Castillo llegó a la ceremonia de inauguración de la cumbre acompañado de la primera dama de la Nación, Lilia Paredes. Fueron recibidos por el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, y la primera dama Jill Biden, anfitriones de esta reunión internacional.

In this context, he maintained that Peru agreed to be the host country in 2018 because the summit is a valuable platform for joint action that must be permanently strengthened.

“Since the first summit, held in the United States in 1994, it has invited us to discuss common concerns and develop a shared vision for the future development of the region,” he said.

The head of state said that important achievements have been made, such as the creation of the business dialogue in the Americas, the adoption of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, as well as the efforts to materialize the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and the Inter-American Convention against Terrorism, among others.

He highlighted the 57 actions against corruption adopted at the VIII Summit of the Americas, held in Lima, which guide the actions of the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) to combat and eradicate this scourge, strengthen democratic governance and protection of human rights.

President Castillo arrived at the opening ceremony of the summit accompanied by the first lady of the Nation, Lilia Paredes. They were received by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the First Lady Jill Biden, hosts of this international meeting.
