English translation
ADEX exports total more than US$ 585 million (January-April 2022), and the XVIII Exporting Textile Forum opens on June 21 in Lima.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe Shipments abroad of the textile-apparel chain totaled US$ 585 million 560 thousand in the first four months of 2022, reflecting an increase of 35.4 % compared to the same period in 2021 (US$ 432 million 511 thousand), although without reaching its historical record of 2012 (US$ 665 million 895 thousand), reported the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

For this reason, and in order to strengthen the capacities of the members of the chain and add to their total recovery, the union will hold the XVIII Exporter Textile Forum on June 21 at the BTH Hotel (Lima), with the participation of prominent exhibitors from Peru. , Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Sri Lanka and the US, who will address issues of technology, sustainability and new consumer trends after the pandemic, among others.

Public-private work is fundamental in the organization of the forum, which with the motto ‘Peruvian garments for the world: quality with sustainability’, will seek to contribute to the competitiveness of the sector and continue to bring more benefits to the economy.

On behalf of ADEX will be its president, Julio Pérez Alván, the president of the Apparel Committee, Juan José Córdova Benavides, and the president of the Textile Committee, Carlos Penny-Bidegaray; as well as the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), Ana Cecilia Gervasi Díaz.

BILL
In his presentation to the Foreign Trade Commission of the Congress of the Republic a few days ago, the second vice president of ADEX, César Tello Ramírez, highlighted the importance of Law 22342 (Non-Traditional Export Contracts Law), and expressed his concern about Bill No. 805 that seeks to eliminate it.

He added that the textile-clothing industry is important in generating foreign exchange (US$ 1,641 million in 2021), decent jobs, mostly female, youth and in socioeconomic sectors D and E for the national and international market (about 400 thousand direct and another 300 thousand indirect), represents 10% of manufacturing production and has a 1.9% share of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“Right now there are 89,000 people under this regime (Law No. 22342), of which 80% or 85% are from the textile-clothing chain (agribusiness has other legislation). The clothing category has registered growth since 2017, but it is a recovery from what we had before,” he said.

He explained that in recent years there have been falls in the number of garments and volume. In FOB amount, exports reached a ceiling of US$ 1,644 million in 2008 and last year they totaled US$ 1,155 million.

“The main customer is the United States, which imports garments from the world that we produce in the country for close to US$ 80 billion. However, Peru sold US$828 million in 2006 and US$715 million last year, that is, we are not even 1% of what the US imports”, he said.

For all these reasons, he believed that Bill No. 805 seeks to destroy everything that allowed the growth of the chain. “We must strengthen it and not degrade it, this initiative seeks to destroy everything that allowed us to improve,” he emphasized.

On the other hand, he reported that there is in the Economy Commission of the Congress of the Republic the project of Law 1567/2021-CR that seeks to strengthen the labor rights of workers subject to 22342, on which it must start as soon as possible. Debate and a technical discussion possible, which allows its approval, since this initiative seeks, apart from strengthening the rights of workers, to improve the reactivation, competitiveness and formalization of the sustainable Peruvian textile industry.
