Start a complementary diet for babies, EsSalud nutritionists give you the advice to achieve it.

Peruvian News Agency PRENSAPERU.PE https://prensaperu.pe Twitter: @prensaperupe There is no doubt that breast milk is the best food for a newborn, but after six months, the baby must start a complementary feeding through the consumption of soft and solid foods, rich in iron, as well as vegetables, carbohydrates and cereals that contribute to their development and good health.

Wendy Cubas, a nutritionist at EsSalud’s Octavio Mongrut hospital, explained that from the sixth month of life, the child requires the consumption of other foods but without giving up breastfeeding, which is recommended to extend it until two years of age.

He argued that the complementary feeding of the baby should be varied, rich in vegetables, sources of iron, as well as carbohydrates, cereals and protein foods.

“The first key message is to give him thick or second meals. It must be clear that the baby cannot be given soups or broths, the more concentrated the food is, the more nutrients it will ingest,” he said.

AGES AND QUANTITIES
The EsSalud specialist said that the second key message is that “the older you are, you will eat more and more times a day.” This means that the growth of the baby will also mark a new guideline regarding the amounts of food that should be eaten, without neglecting breast milk.

After half a year, the quantities can be distributed in this way: from six to eight months, the little ones should eat thick purees – which can be lightened with a splash of olive oil – between three and five tablespoons.

From nine to eleven months, they will start with chopped foods of five to seven tablespoons and, from one year to more, the baby will eat from the family pot. It is important to keep in mind that food should be prepared low in salt and seasoning.

IRON CHILDREN
A third key message – notes the specialist – is the consumption of foods rich in iron, essential for the development of the baby, such as blood, liver, spleen, dark fish such as Bonito.

The fourth key message is to always accompany meals with vegetables and fruits of different colors, since each color contains different contributions in nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are good for the baby.

He noted that, as a fifth and final key message, we should also offer the baby legumes when his digestive system has matured. In that case, it is recommended that, when you eat lentils, chickpeas or beans, you accompany it with something citrus to help fix the iron better.

“We must not forget that to stimulate chewing when the baby already has teeth, the food goes from being thick or pureed to minced and solid”, he pointed out.
