“Quiero informales que esta mañana, en el Consejo de Condecoración presidido por el presidente del Consejo de Ministros, se acordó otorgar la condecoración Medalla al Defensor de la Democracia a los mineros y personal auxiliar que participaron en la construcción de los cuatro túneles que posibilitó el operativo militar Chavín de Huántar y a los 59 suboficiales de la Policía Nacional del Perú”, manifestó el mandatario.

El jefe de Estado también expresó su reconocimiento al Grupo Especial de Inteligencia del Perú (GEIN) de la PNP por lograr la pacificación del país, tras la captura del líder terrorista de Sendero Luminoso, Abimael Guzmán Reinoso el 12 de setiembre de 1992.

“Hago el reconocimiento a todo el GEIN, creado el 5 de marzo de 1990, como artífices de la captura del siglo, que supuso el fin de una época del terror que causó miles de víctimas, no solo de las instituciones militares y policiales sino también de la población civil”, señaló.

Durante su alocución en la ceremonia por el Día de los Defensores de la Democracia en la sede de la DIRCOTE, el presidente Castillo aseguró que el gobierno cree en el desarrollo de la Nación mediante el esfuerzo y la unidad de todos, por lo que invocó a los peruanos a trabajar en conjunto contra enemigos latentes como el hambre, la miseria, la desigualdad y la discriminación.

“No existe progreso sin paz y sin seguridad, por lo que es importante recordar que el país que queremos y que hemos heredado, con sus virtudes y defectos, ha sido también el resultado de sus esfuerzos, de sus instituciones, a través de sus Fuerzas Armadas, la Policía Nacional del Perú, así como de los comités de autodefensa, de las rondas campesinas y de miles de ciudadanos que han hecho posible la consolidación de la democracia y la restitución de la paz”, puntualizó.

Participaron en el evento el ministro del Interior, Willy Huerta Olivas; la presidenta del Poder Judicial, Elvia Barrios y el jefe de la Dirección Contra el Terrorismo de la PNP (DIRCOTE), Óscar Arriola Delgado.

“I acknowledge the entire GEIN, created on March 5, 1990, as the architects of the capture of the century, which marked the end of an era of terror that caused thousands of victims, not only of military and police institutions but also of the civilian population,” he said.

During his speech at the ceremony for the Day of the Defenders of Democracy at the DIRCOTE headquarters, President Castillo assured that the government believes in the development of the Nation through the effort and unity of all, for which he called on Peruvians to work together against latent enemies such as hunger, misery, inequality and discrimination.

“There is no progress without peace and security, so it is important to remember that the country we love and that we have inherited, with its virtues and defects, has also been the result of its efforts, its institutions, through its Armed Forces.
