Al año se registran 69,849 nuevos casos detectados y fallecen 34,976, de este total, se estima que 37, 977 corresponden a mujeres y 32, 663 corresponden a varones.

El 70% de los casos de cáncer son detectados en estado avanzado (estadios III y IV), solo un 30% se detecta en estadio temprano, de estos solo el 4% se detecta en estadio 0 (in situ).

El Congreso de la República aprobó la Ley Nacional del Cáncer, la cual tiene como objetivo garantizar la cobertura universal e integral de los servicios de salud para todos los pacientes oncológicos, a fin de garantizar el acceso al derecho fundamental a la salud en igualdad de condiciones y sin ningún tipo de discriminación.

Asimismo, Adolfo Dammert, presidente de la Liga Contra el Cáncer resaltó el gran paso que ha tomado el gobierno peruano en favor de los pacientes oncológicos y en la creación de una cultura de prevención frente al cáncer. “Sin duda, esta ley tendrá un impacto positivo en nuestro país, pues no solo está considerando al estado actual de la enfermedad en Perú, sino, también indica acciones que pueden prevenir que el número de casos aumente.”, informó. En base a esto, el vocero compartió los principales beneficios que brinda la aprobación de la Ley Nacional del Cáncer:

1. Garantizar la cobertura universal, gratuita y prioritaria de los servicios de salud para todos los pacientes oncológicos, indistintamente al tipo de cáncer que padezcan, con la finalidad de asegurar el acceso al derecho fundamental a la salud en igualdad de condiciones y sin discriminación.
2. Si la persona no contara con Seguro Social de Salud (ESSALUD) o privado, o la cobertura de este resultase insuficiente, será afiliada de manera inmediata al Seguro Integral de Salud (SIS).
3. El Ministerio de Salud en coordinación con el Ministerio de Educación y los distintos sectores involucrados, incluyendo al sector privado, desarrollan estrategias orientadas a la promoción de la salud y prevención de enfermedades oncológicas en la comunidad educativa nacional, con proyección a toda la población, que promuevan la construcción de una cultura en salud en el país.
4. El Estado, a través de las entidades del sector salud de los tres niveles de gobierno, incentiva y promueve la implementación de acciones de promoción de la salud, prevención primaria del cáncer y control de cáncer a nivel nacional de manera igualitaria, inclusiva y sin discriminación.
5. Creación de la Red Oncológica Nacional, a cargo de Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas en su calidad de organismo público ejecutor e integrada por los institutos regionales y de los diversos centros oncológicos, con el propósito de promover la implementación de centros especializados de atención oncológica integral y brindar un diagnóstico adecuado, atención oportuna y seguimiento de los pacientes con cáncer a nivel nacional.
6. La investigación y educación científica biomédica en el control del cáncer en los tres niveles de gobierno, así como en todas las diferentes entidades del Sistema Nacional de Salud, con el apoyo de universidades públicas y privadas, organizaciones de pacientes con cáncer y la cooperación técnica internacional.
7. El cáncer de mama y de cuello uterino se declara de necesidad pública e interés nacional la organización y ejecución de acciones para la prevención, promoción, control y vigilancia del cáncer de mama, así como de cuello uterino y el fortalecimiento de la estrategia de vacunación contra el virus del papiloma humano en las niñas y adolescentes en etapa escolar a nivel nacional.
8. Telemedicina para combatir el cáncer y la creación del banco nacional de tumores.
   Finalmente, Dammert comunicó que desde la Liga Contra el Cáncer se encuentran con gran optimismo y a la espera de la publicación del reglamento, de la Ley Nacional del Cáncer, pues gracias a ello se contará con un instrumento específico que garantice los derechos de las personas que luchan día a día contra esta enfermedad.
